Amy’s Mum Speaks Out - August 20 2007
Amy Winehouse’s mum has spoken out about her daughter’s recent troubles.

Janis revealed she is beside herself with worry about her youngest daughter.

"I think her brain’s addled," she told the Mail on Sunday. "She’s on a path of self-mutilation, quite literally. What else are all the tattoos about? I hate them. They’re horrible. It’s like a sickness but she cannot see it."

And the 52-year-old said that their relationship has broken down in recent months.

"Sometimes I don’t phone her because if I don’t phone her, I don’t get hurt," she explained. "She can’t just brush me off and say she’s too busy or tired."

A month after the singer’s marriage, her mother says she finally saw her daughter - and gave her her wedding present of a kettle.

"She didn’t want me to come round. She said she was tired. Blake was there lounging on the sofa. We said ’hello’ but I don’t feel that I can connect with Amy when he’s around. In the end, I only stayed 10 minutes."

She added: "It’s hard and it hurts but I know I can’t help her right now. She’s got to do that for herself and every day I can only hope she’s strong enough to do it."

Winehouse Out of V - Aug 17 2007
Amy Winehouse has pulled out of the V Festival and cancelled all her touring commitments for August, her spokeswoman said.

"Amy Winehouse is putting all her touring commitments for this month on hold until further notice in order to address her health issues," spokeswoman Tracey Miller said in a statement.

"Amy will now not be performing at this weekend’s V Festival in Chelmsford and Staffordshire. Her family has requested that the media respect Amy’s privacy at this time. There will be no further comment."

Amy, 23, was taken to hospital last week for "severe exhaustion".

Reports said she had allegedly taken a cocktail of drugs and alcohol.

The star was then said to have checked into the £10,000-a-week Causeway treatment centre in Essex.

She briefly left but explained that she’d not quit rehab and had simply popped home to pick up a guitar.

Interviewed by Radio 1 outside her London home, the singer claimed: "I’m fine. I’ve put on half a stone and I feel fine."

Asked if newspaper reports of her drug abuse were true, she replied: "I wouldn’t say so, no."

Amy’s husband Blake Fielder-Civil said: "It’s been a difficult time for me and Amy, the fact is we are still together and going back to the place tonight."

He also said: "It’s not as bad as everyone thinks but she’s fine, she’s loved and looked after." He said she was determined to get well.

Amy was due to play at Chelmsford, Essex, on Saturday (August 18) and Weston Park, Staffordshire, on Sunday (August 19).

Biography

Amy Winehouse hails from Osidge Lane, Southgate, although she currently lives in Camden. She is being feted as the new big thing with a voice likened to soul artists of the caliber of American soul queen Erykah Badu.

Amy and her brother Alex were brought up by her mum and grandmother, and fondly remembers ’Growing up in East Finchley was cool.’ She started playing guitar at 12 and listening to jazz. Her acceptance into the prestigious Sylvia Young Theatre School seemed to spell big things for Amy, although she was expelled at 15, apparently for getting her nose pierced. She carried on her studies at an all girls school in Mill Hill, which she hated as there were no fella’s there.

Amy made appearances with the Youth Jazz Orchestra, produced a demo tape of jazz covers that was picked up by Universal/Island Records, and they signed her almost immediately. She released her album Frank in October 2003 and supported Jamie Callum on his national tour. Amy then went on to be nominated for two Brit Awards, British Female Solo Artist and Best Urban Artist. Not bad for a girl of 20!
