Girls Aloud ’blow £1m in a year’ - Dec 6 2006
It would seem that Girls Aloud are enjoying the profits of fame and fortune, reportedly spending more than £1m in just 12 months.
According to accounts filed by the band’s company, the feisty girl group raked in £1,234,267 in a year.
But their company now has just £14,772 left in the bank and actually has an operating loss of nearly 30 grand.
Cheryl Tweedy, 23, Sarah Harding, 25, Nadine Coyle, 21, Nicola Roberts, 21, and Kimberley Walsh, 25, jointly own a company called Tapeview.
Despite scoring a number one album last month and a string of hits including Biology and Jump, the girls have spent most of the dosh, according to The Sun.
We can guess where some of it went - earlier Cheryl had a lavish wedding to footballer Ashley Cole, and Nadine has been regularly jetting across the Atlantic to see Desperate Housewives hunk Jesse Metcalfe.
Nicola has admitted spending her money on "stupid things I don’t really need" and Sarah has resorted to earning a bit on the side as the new face of underwear firm, Ultimo.
The bank account details were signed by Cheryl and Sarah.
A financial expert told The Sun: "It’s not dire straights. But when the money coming in is less than money going out, their spending has to be kept under control."
Profile
Who ever thought that when reality TV show Popstars: The Rivals created Girls Aloud that they would become not only a pop phenomenon but actually credible? It’s sometimes hard to remember that this chart topping girl group started life as a group of wannabes picked by Louis Walsh, Geri Halliwell and Pete Waterman. Almost as hard as it is to remember their rival boy band One True Voice.
The original band was made up of Nadine Coyle, Cheryl Tweedy, Sarah Harding, Hazel Kaneswaren and Nicola Ward. However when Hazel was discovered to be too old and Nicola refused to sign the contract (she thought the girls were being swizzed when it came to money…who’s kicking themselves now?) runners up Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh were drafted in. Managed by X Factor’s Louis the girls released their first single, the surprisingly attitude-filled Sound of the Underground at Christmas 2002 and quickly whipped One True Voice in to shape by hitting number one.
