But the I’m A Celeb star told the paper his chronic dependency was really to blame for his problems.
"I used to be hooked on weed," he confessed. "I began when I was 13 and by the time Busted made it big I was accustomed to it. I smoked every single day. It was a way of life."
The musician admitted he became paranoid, socially awkward and his memory was terrible.
"It was New Year 2005 when I gave up. Me and Emma were making New Year’s resolutions and she told me if I had another joint she would leave me. I realised I needed to do something and when she threatened to never speak to me again I took action.
"The Priory did nothing for me. I hated it. I left after two weeks. You’re supposed to be there for a month but I’d had enough.
"Emma was the one who helped me kick my addiction and I will be forever grateful."
Busted won’t reform? - Dec 20 2006
It seems I’m A Celebrity winner Matt Willis has revealed that boyband Busted won’t get back together - because his former bandmate Charlie is heading to the US.
While many former groups have considered a comeback after the recent success of Take That, the King of the Jungle has apparently said Busted have split for good.
The 22-year-old is quoted by the Daily Star as saying: "Charlie would never come back. Fightstar are going to America to get a record deal."
Matt, whose album Don’t Let It Go To Waste hasn’t sold as well as predicted after his TV win, says he’s tired of worrying about his musical future.
"I’m sick of worrying about my career," he said.
"The boyband is dead. OK, Westlife and Take That have had No 1s, so some would say I’m wrong. But the way I see it is that it’s dead. If pop music is good then it will succeed but it’s down to the songs.
"Pop went through a stage when the only time you’d hear it was on programmes for kids.
"There’s not one show for pop now. I can’t go on This Morning every day."
Matt set for signing - Dec 13 2006
Jungle King Matt Willis is preparing to reward his loyal subjects with a live performance and signing of his new single in Manchester.
The 23-year-old singer will be appearing at the Virgin Megastore in the Arndale Centre tomorrow to promote his third solo single Don’t Let It Go To Waste.
The former Busted star and winner of this year’s I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! will rock the basement stage and then meet fans for a signing.
Matt recently wowed viewers of the ITV1 reality show when he ate disgusting animal parts in one of the most dramatic Bushtucker Trials ever.
The incredible feat went on to win him the title of King of the Jungle, but Matt will be much happier getting back to singing again after his ordeal.
He first performed solo in January this year and released his debut solo album Don’t Let It Go To Waste last month.
Matt ’wants to be taken seriously’ - Dec 8 2006
King Of The Jungle Matt Willis has admitted that despite his reality TV show win he still wants to be taken seriously as a musician - unlike The Ordinary Boys’ Preston.
