Police probe Jemima’s missing cat - June 20 2007
A valuable cat thought to belong to society heiress Jemima Khan sparked a police search yesterday after it went missing.
The pet was one of two Bengal cats given to Jemima by her former boyfriend Hugh Grant, the Daily Mail reported.
The cats - originally created by crossing an Asian Leopard Cat with a domestic cat - can cost between £300 to thousands of pounds for a pedigree variety.
A spokesman for Scotland Yard said that originally both cats were missing. The first vanished on Friday, and the second disappeared on Monday but was returned shortly afterwards, he said.
There is still no sign of the first cat and 33-year-old Jemima called police on Monday.
Two female officers attended the address in the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham yesterday to speak to her about the "high value" disappearance, police said.
"We attended an address on June 19 regarding the disappearance of a Bengal cat," a Yard spokesman said.
"Officers spoke to the owner but at this stage, there is nothing to suggest the cat’s disappearance is suspicious. However, if evidence to the contrary emerges, this will be considered."
He defended the decision to send officers to help find the celebrity’s pet, saying: "It was not treated as a 999 call but because of the high value of the missing property - a Bengal cat is not your average moggy - we feel that the response was perfectly normal and proportionate to the value."
Jemima backs breastfeeding campaign - May 16 2007
Jemima Khan pledged her support today for a manifesto designed to increase awareness of the importance of breastfeeding.
More than 30 organisations - including five Royal Colleges, Save the Children, Unison and Unicef UK - have joined forces to create the Breastfeeding Manifesto Coalition.
The document sets out the need for Government action to support new mothers, with the aim of improving babies’ health and saving the NHS millions of pounds a year.
She said many mothers felt reluctant to breastfeed but it was the best way to feed newborns.
She added: "It gives protection against diseases that no formula can, and changes daily to meet your babies’ needs.
"Sadly, many women, for a variety of reasons, feel reluctant to breastfeed, but I believe it should be the normal acceptable thing to do.
"The World Health Organisation recommends that infants should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life and continue to be breastfed alongside the introduction of solids for up to two years and beyond.
"Yet sadly, virtually no babies in the UK are exclusively breastfed for six months.
"The Unicef Baby Friendly Initiative is working with the health service so mothers understand more about breastfeeding and are enabled to breastfeed if they wish to.
"This is a vitally important health issue and we need commitment and resourcing from Government to ensure all hospital and community staff receive the right level of training."
