Russell Watson Triumphs At the Classical Brits
Rags to riches tenor, Russell Watson scooped two
awards at last nights classical Brit awards at the Royal Albert
Hall.
"I can't begin to explain how much this award means
to me - well it's a very, very long period of hard work," he said.
"Before this, the only thing I won was the egg and
spoon race, aged seven."
His classical career was launched after he was spotted
singing Nessun Dorma in a working men's club in his native Salford.
The annual bash organised by the classical music business saw Watson
win Album Of The Year and the Best Selling Debut Album awards.
Nigel Kennedy won the Male Artist of the Year, and
conductor Simon Rattle won three awards, for Outstanding Contribution
and two awards for an album or Mahler's 10th Symphony with the Berlin
Philharmonic Orchestra, the orchestra that he becomes principal
conductor for in 2002.
This year's ceremony is only the second for the
Classical Brits, which has been trying to tread the fine line between
the pop-crossover world of artists like Bond and Vanessa-Mae and
what is seen as the more purist world of the classical mainstream.
The awards will be broadcast on ITV on 3 June.
