The V&A has installed a number of hidden cameras
to protect its collection, after vandalism has occurred on a number
of items. Members of the public are not thought to be the culprits
as the damage has occurred outside opening hours. Items damaged
include a terracotta madonna and child and the frame or a major
work of art.
The motive for the vandalism which is thought to
be fairly minor is not clear, however various theories have been
put forward. There is the possibility that the attacks are the work
of one disturbed individual or an attempt by security staff under
threat of privatisation to increase the apparent threat and therefore
their own importance.
Cleaners and guards are now working in pairs to
protect individual workers from accusation.
Two months ago it was reported that undercover detectives
were watching V&A staff to investigate drunkenness amongst museum
guards and to investigate failures in security.
