Synopsis
Following a series of 1950s 'Heimat films' presented by the Goethe-Institut in April 2008, Heimat? What Heimat? presents six of the most significant 'Anti-Heimat films' from the New German Cinema of the late 1960s and 1970s. Starting with the rarely-viewed Hunting Scenes from Lower Bavaria (1969), the film that paved the way for the resurrection and revision of the traditional 'Heimat film', the season displays the wide variety of the genre. From the socially engaged Mathias Kneissl (1971), which tracks the life of the anarchist hero and is bursting with the rebellious spirit of the 1960s, to the deceptively idyllic I Love You, I Kill You (1971) with its touches of science fiction and free love, the series includes work from some of Germany's most respected filmmakers, including Werner Herzog, Reinhard Hauff and Volker Schlöö
