Impeccable cast noir-homage from Melville, with Belmondo playing the ambiguous stoolie-who-might-have-a-deeper-game. He's perhaps not quite so convincing in a trench-coat as Delon proved in Le Samourai, but Melville ladles on the seedy atmospherics and brutishness with elan.
