They have more in common than their musical talents - both hang out in the same North London watering holes, like their booze, and adore old jazz singers.

Amy explains: "Pete wanted to do a Billie Holiday cover and I was like, ’No, let’s write something together’.

"I like writing songs. He’s an amazing songwriter and I’d love to be able to say I wrote a song with Pete Doherty."

A source added: "Pete and Amy have formed a bit of a mutual appreciation society.

"It’s early stages and they’re still hammering out what label the new material will come out on.

"But, time permitting, they’ll be in the studio early next year."

Amy has schoolgirl tantrum? - Nov 30 2006

It seems jazz songstress Amy Winehouse upset a group of pupils yesterday - after refusing to perform to them and stropping off in tears.

The 23-year-old visited her old school - the BRIT School For Performing Arts And Technology in Croydon - but apparently refused to take part in filming for TV and a live performance after a row with her boyfriend, reports The Daily Mirror.

The recording was for the show The Brits Are Coming, to be broadcast next year.

A source told the paper: "It was chaos. Some of the younger children were crying because they were so looking forward to seeing Amy perform.

"And the production staff just looked at each other in disbelief, not knowing what to say.

"We tried to get her to change her mind, but she was having none of it and kept shouting ’no’."

A pupil added: "Amy was in such a state and kept crying. She is an idol to many of us here because of what she’s achieved so soon after leaving and we couldn’t believe how she behaved."

The school has a number of famous ex-attendees including Katie Melua and The Kooks.

Amy up for 2 Brits - Jan 04
Southgate girl Amy Winehouse has been nominated for two Brit Awards...

She may be new to the scene, but the music industry hasn’t been slow to catch on to this new sensation. Now Amy is up against the likes of Dido, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Jamelia and Annie Lennox. With refreshing honesty, she has said that the Best Female award is ’probably beyond her grasp’, but she is happy to be nominated. I bet she is! The other award she is nominated for is Best Urban Artist.

Biography

Amy Winehouse hails from Osidge Lane, Southgate, although she currently lives in Camden. She is being feted as the new big thing with a voice likened to soul artists of the caliber of American soul queen Erykah Badu.

Amy and her brother Alex were brought up by her mum and grandmother, and fondly remembers ’Growing up in East Finchley was cool.’ She started playing guitar at 12 and listening to jazz. Her acceptance into the prestigious Sylvia Young Theatre School seemed to spell big things for Amy, although she was expelled at 15, apparently for getting her nose pierced. She carried on her studies at an all girls school in Mill Hill, which she hated as there were no fella’s there.

Amy made appearances with the Youth Jazz Orchestra, produced a demo tape of jazz covers that was picked up by Universal/Island Records, and they signed her almost immediately. She released her album Frank in October 2003 and supported Jamie Callum on his national tour. Amy then went on to be nominated for two Brit Awards, British Female Solo Artist and Best Urban Artist. Not bad for a girl of 20!
