Family await release of Anna’s body - Mar 1 2007

Anna Nicole Smith’s friends and family awaited the release of her body today, as they planned for the starlet’s funeral in the Bahamas after weeks of legal wrangling over her remains.

A horde of reporters and onlookers gathered outside the Broward County medical examiner’s office, where the star’s body has remained refrigerated since her February 8 death in a hotel room at age 39.

It wasn’t known when her body would be released, but Richard Milstein, the court-appointed advocate for Anna Nicole’s five-month-old daughter Dannielynn, has said the funeral would be tomorrow in the Bahamas.

The former model will be buried in a custom-made gown next to her 20-year-old son Daniel following an "over the top" memorial service, said a friend.

The service, with about 300 guests at an undisclosed church, will feature lots of pink flowers, her favourite colour, and singing from a well-known performer whose name organisers weren’t ready to disclose, said the friend, Patrik Simpson of Beverly Hills, California.

"It will be a very beautiful, Anna Nicole send-off," he said last night. "Of course it will be over the top because it’s Anna Nicole."

The burial at Lakeview Memorial Gardens & Mausoleums will be more intimate, with about 30 people, he said.

The star’s death set off a battle over her burial and for custody of Dannielynn between her partner Howard Stern, her estranged mother Virgie Arthur, and ex-boyfriend Larry Birkhead.

Virgie had wanted to bury Anna Nicole in her native Texas but Howard insisted the former Playboy Playmate wanted to be buried next to Daniel.

Model ’would not want Texas burial’ - Feb 28 2007

Lawyers for Anna Nicole Smith’s boyfriend told an appeals court that her estranged mother was trying to "place her in death where she never wanted to be in life" -- Texas.

Smith’s mother appealed against a Florida judge’s ruling that left the decision on the Playboy model’s burial to a court-appointed advocate for her five-month-old daughter Dannielynn.

The child’s advocate, Richard Milstein, has said he would bury Smith in the Bahamas, beside her 20-year-old son.

In an earlier court filing, he noted that "every witness including (her mother Virgie) Arthur testified that Anna Nicole Smith expressed an interest in being buried in either California or the Bahamas."

Arthur wants her daughter buried in her native Texas and argued in the appeal that the mother is the "legally recognised person" to take the remains. Her lawyer Roberta Mandel said she was willing to take the fight to the Florida Supreme Court if necessary.

Biography

Vickie Lynn Hogan, better known as Anna Nicole Smith, was born on November 28 1967 in Houston, Texas and raised in nearby Mexia by her mother after her father left the family.
Although she had aspirations to become ’the next Marilyn Monroe’, Vickie began working at Jim’s Krispy Fried Chicken where she met her first husband, Billy Wayne Smith.  They married when Vickie was just seventeen.  The next year she gave birth to their son Daniel and in 1987 seperated from her husband, finding work as an exotic dancer in Houston.

Whilst working as a stripper she met elderly millionaire J. Howard Marshall, with whom she began a relationship despite the sixty three year age gap.  In 1994 the couple married amid much tabloid excitement.  Marshall died thirteen months later, leaving nothing to his young wife.

In the interim Vickie, now going by the name Anna Nicole Smith, appeared on the front cover of Playboy, being made Playmate of the Year by Hugh Hefner.  She bagged a deal with Guess?, replacing supermodel Claudia Schiffer and finding herself a household name.  Meanwhile Anna Nicole battled Marshall’s sons in the courts for her share of her late husbands millions, however she was eventually bankrupted and ordered to pay $1million dollars in fees.  She was again given the right to fight for her entitlement following the death of her stepson.

Anna Nicole’s acting career was much less publicised than her marriage, although she appeared in high profile films The Hudsucker Proxy and Naked Gun 33 1/3.  Her bigger roles came in smaller films such as To The Limit and Skyscraper and on television, appearing as herself in wacky reality TV series The Anna Nicole Show.  She later apeared in Be Cool and Wasabi Tuna.

On September 7 2006 Anna Nicole gave birth to a daughter, Dannielynn Hope Marshall Stern, claiming the father was her lawyer Howard K Stern, although her ex boyfriend, Larry Birkhead, claimed the child as his.  Three days later her son, Daniel, died of an apparent drug overdose while visiting his mother and half sister in hospital.  Later that same month Anna Nicole and Howard K Stern exchanged vows in a commitment ceremony in the Bahamas.

On February 8 2007, the day after a date for a paternity test on her daughter had been set, Anna Nicole collapsed at a hotel in Florida and later died.  An autopsy has yet to determine the cause of death.
