BBC to broadcast Diana concert - Dec 21 2006
The BBC will broadcast next year’s tribute concert to the Princess of Wales, it was announced today.
The July 1 star-studded event is being organised by Prince William and Harry to mark the 10th anniversary of their mother’s death.
It will take place at the new £757 million Wembley Stadium on what would have been Diana’s 46th birthday.
The line-up includes Sir Elton John and the late Princess’s favourite band Duran Duran.
Other artists announced so far are Joss Stone, hip hop star Pharrell Williams and Bryan Ferry.
BBC vision director Jana Bennett and director of BBC audio and music Jenny Abramsky said in a joint statement: "We’re thrilled that Princes William and Harry have decided to work with us - the event will be broadcast live on BBC One and BBC Radio 2 - as well as online - and will be a real highlight for the whole of the UK this summer."
BBC One Controller Peter Fincham said: "This is a key event for the British public this summer, and I am delighted that BBC One has been asked to broadcast it into the nation’s living rooms."
Radio 2 Controller Lesley Douglas said: "This promises to be not only a brilliant concert but also a really important one. I am delighted that Radio 2 has been given the opportunity to reflect the event across its output."
Diana concert tickets banned from eBay - Dec 13 2006
The first Concert for Diana tickets appeared on eBay this morning, priced at up to £300 per pair.
But the internet auction site has banned them from sale "out of respect" for the late Princess’s memory.
It is pulling the listings and contacting vendors to explain that the tickets cannot be re-sold on eBay.
One pair of tickets to the concert drew 19 bids in just over an hour.
The auction site today placed a message on its internal community page, saying: "In view of the unique and commemorative nature of the Concert for Diana event and as a mark of respect for the memory of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, we’ve decided to prohibit the resale of tickets to this event on the site.
"Any tickets currently listed will be removed as soon as possible.
"Now that the details of the event have been confirmed, we’ll be contacting the charities involved to suggest ways they can further raise money for Diana’s favourite causes through our eBay for Charity programme."
