Hollywood star for ex-Beatle George - June 22 2007
George Harrison, Ricky Martin, Tim Robbins and Cate Blanchett are among stars to be enshrined in the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Hollywood's honorary mayor, Johnny Grant, announced the list of 2008 inductees, noting recipients were chosen from hundreds of nominations received by the Walk of Fame Committee.
Pavement stars are given to entertainers in films, television, theatre and recording. Directors of the committee selected recipients and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce board ratified the selections on June 8.
"I am happy to announce an array of celebrities who have earned this recognition for a combination of professional achievement and community involvement," Grant said.
Beatles lyrics sold for £300,000 - Jan 16 2007
George Harrison’s handwritten lyrics to the Beatles song While My Guitar Gently Weeps sold at auction for £300,000.
The lyrics were the star lot in an auction of rock and roll memorabilia at Cooper Auctions’ US sale in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The lyrics are the earliest known version of the song and contain lines not included in the recorded version, which appeared on 1968’s White Album.
At the bottom of the page George wrote "The band leader said he ain’t playin’ no more" - believed to be a reference to tensions among the group.
The working draft features his handwritten corrections.
The lines omitted from the final version read: "I look from the wings at the play you are staging/While my guitar gently weeps/As I’m sitting here doing nothing but aging/Still my guitar gently weeps."
George and the band first recorded the song on July 25, 2020 using these lyrics.
Revisions were made later and the final version made the album.
On the reverse of the page are the lyrics to Hey Jude, in the hand of Beatles road manager Mal Evans.
Cooper Auctions founder Louise Cooper said: "This auction is a once in 20 or 30 years experience, it’s that rare for items like this to go on sale.
She added: "People are becoming more aware that as well as owning a piece of history, these items are mega investments."
The lot went to an unnamed bidder and was sold by a private collector.
Other items included a picture of a bird drawn by John Lennon aged 11, which sold for more than £30,000.
The auction prices did not include the buyer’s premium.
Remembering George - 25/09/03
The last two Beatles Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr joined George’s family to remember the youngest Beatle.
They attended a screening of a film documenting a concert held last year in memory of the guitarist. This was held at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and Paul and Ringo both got on the stage to perform at the event. Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Billy Preston and members of Monty Python also attended.
At the same time a screening of the film was held in California, where Yoko Ono, Paul’s wife Heather and Ringo’s wife Barbara attended.
A DVD will be released in November of this film, and George’s widow Olivia and son Dhani are donating the proceeds to the Material World Charitable Foundation, established by George in 1973.
