Girls Aloud

Where most reality singers would have faded into obscurity after a couple of singles Girls Aloud followed in the footsteps of Lemar and Will Young, releasing single after single as well as a hit album, also called Sound of the Underground, which was kept off of the number one spot by Justin Timberlake’s debut.  However, the album went platinum after the release of Jump, which featured on the soundtrack to Brit flick Love Actually.

The trip to the top wasn’t all plain sailing for Girls Aloud though, in June 2003 Cheryl was convicted of assaulting toilet attendant Sophie Amogbokpa at a Surrey nightclub.  The trial, in which Cheryl was accused of racism, was highly publicised and ensured the girls’ status as prime tabloid fodder.  Nonetheless their fans stuck by them and in 2004 What Will The Neighbours Say debuted at number six and produced several top ten singles including Love Machine.  The album marked their move from short lived TV band to serious icons of pop as they were made Glamour’s Band of the Year and were nominated for prestigious Brit Awards.

A third album, Chemistry, brought not only further singles but true celebrity status for Cheryl who married England footballer Ashley Cole 2006 as well as Nadine who hooked up with Hollywood actor Jesse Metcalfe.  Meanwhile Sarah was also rumoured to be dating Stephen Dorff.  Despite rumours of a split, with tabloids claiming that Sarah had plans for a solo career following the release of a Greatest Hits compilation, The Sound of Girls Aloud, and a cover of Tiffany’s I Think We’re Alone Now, the girls assure their fans that they have plenty more hits still in them.
