The Broadcasting Standards Commission has cautioned Bow resident Graham Norton for a crass joke he told about the late Maurice Gibb.

He joked to viewers of his Channel 4 show: "I bet Maurice Gibb’s heart monitor was singing the tune of Stayin’ Alive." The host has since apologised to the Gibb family who were outraged by the remark and branded him "scum". Channel 4 said they regretted the comment caused offence and it was in no way mocking the tragedy.

I live in Camps Bay! - 11/02/03
Where else would Bow resident and TV presenter Graham Norton have a holiday home!

This South African resort sounds just perfect. Graham has splashed out on a whopping £350,000 luxury pad in this resort, which is well known for having a lively gay scene. He actually chose the house for the stunning location, but reckons the name of the resort is an absolute bonus. Right up his street!

Norton’s cheeky Bee Gee jibe - 15/01/03
Bow resident Graham Norton has sparked a flood of complaints after he made a joke about the death of Bee Gee Maurice Gibb. On his Channel 4 show, Norton said: "I bet Maurice Gibb’s heart monitor was singing the tune of Staying Alive." He made the quip just a day after Maurice died from a heart attack. TV watchdogs say viewers jammed their switchboard to complain after Monday night’s V Graham Norton show. The Independent Television Commission will see if broadcasting guidelines were breached, reports The Sun. A spokeswoman for Channel 4 apologised, saying: "Graham is known for his cheeky, irreverent humour. But we are sorry if he caused any offence to viewers."

Blind Date no no for Norton - 09/01/03
Bow comic Graham Norton, who was considered a front-runner to replace Cilla Black as host of Blind Date, has ruled himself out insisting he would not be up to the job.

Into Norton’s private life - 23/12/02
Bow resident Graham Norton has been rather revealing about himself in an interview in The Sunday Telegraph Magazine.

The star revealed the reason why his relationships ends is because he is "impossible’’ to live with. The gay stand-up said that when he arrives home after filming his five-nights-a-week show, V Graham Norton, for Channel 4, he likes nothing better than to close the door on the world. He said: "All my day is spent dealing with other people. When I come home I like it to be empty. The presence of others in my house kind of annoys me. I love coming home and shutting the doors. I feel brain dead. I’m relatively available, but not to live with.’’ Interviewed, Norton, 39, said he had been in love three times, including once with a woman to whom he was engaged. His longest relationship, with American producer Scott Michaels, lasted five years. He said: "My version of falling in love is borderline psychotic. Should be avoided at all costs. Get obsessed. Can’t fall in love and function at the same time. All-consuming. Tunnel vision. Euphoric.’’

On pornography he said: "I use it myself but don’t think you can generalise about pornography because some of it goes very dark places.’’

Biography

Graham Norton was born on the 4th of April in Bandon, County Cork in Ireland. His original name is Graham Walker and dad Billy was a Guiness representitive and his mum Rhoda a leading Mother’s Union member. Graham did want to become a journalist but failed to get a place at a journalism school, so he went to University College Cork to study English and French, but then dropped out at the end of his first year to go travelling.

The USA beckoned and Graham joined a hippy commune in San Fansciso. He was even engaged (albeit briefly) to an American lass but broke it off as he recognized for the first time that he was in fact gay. He returned to Ireland to complete his degree, and then moved to London where he joined the Central School of Speech and Drama. Graham Walker then changed to Graham Norton as there was another member of equity with his original name. Norton is in fact his great-grandmothers maiden name.

He had a few acting jobs, but mainly worked as a waiter and a barman until his late 20’s. He was known for being camp and bitchy and this led to ideas of a comedy performance. He wrote the show ’Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s Grand Farewell Tour’ and took it to the Edinburgh fringe festival in 1991. He staged successful one man shows here and made his name internationally when Charlie’s Angels Go To Hell transferred to London. This got him a Perrier Award nomination in 1997. In the same year Channel Five gave him his first television break, when he stood in for chatshow host Jack Docherty.

He proved his worth so much that he got his own series Bring Me The Head of Light Entertainment. After the show started in 1999, Graham’s star continued to rise and he Norton won many awards, including Gay Entertainer of the Year at the 1999 Gaytime TV Awards and two BAFTA’s for Best Entertainment Performance. He also started his own production company which now produces his own shows. The BBC have attempted to lure him away from Channel Four with rumoured offers in the region of £5 million, but so far he has resisted the urge and stays with Channel Four. His weekday show now goes out five nights a week. Graham Norton currently resides in Bow...
