Javine to represent UK - Mar 05
Popstars drop out Javine is chosen to represent the UK for Eurovision. The singer got a little help from a perky friend in securing her place as the British representative after a Janet Jackson style ’wardrobe malfunction’. Javine, who was initially unsure about trying out for Eurovision, popped out of an orange mini dress during her performance of Touch My Fire garnering a number of complaints from disgusted viewers. Javine’s management have assured press that the malfunction was entirely accidental. The singer beat glamour model Jordan, Pop Idol contestant Andy Scott Lee, operatic crooners Tricolore and gay icon Gina G to become the next British Eurovision hope.

Javine v Jordan - Mar 05
Eurovision hopefuls battle it out in war of words. Jordan has branded Javine a ’silly cow’ as the Eurovision hopeful’s contest hots up. The pair are both favourites to represent the UK in the kitsch singing contest and it looks like Jordan, entering under real name Katie Price, is using her usual tactics. "It’s a shame Jordan feels the need to keep bitching," commented a much more reasonable Javine, "Eurovision is all about the song and the performance so I’ll keep focusing on that. We all sing live on the night so I’ll look forward to hearing her."

Every Loser Wins, as Nick Berry once crooned, and it seems him what used to be Wicksy could see into the future, as least as far as Popstars is concerned. While Hear’say were the winners, losers Liberty X ended up grabbing the spotlight. Then there’s your Gareths and your Dariuses forging ahead with their pop careers, despite not actually winning Pop Idol (let’s try and forget about Rosie Ribbons, Sarah Whatmore et al!).

And now, it’s Javine Hylton’s turn. Remember her? As Popstars - The Rivals got down to the nitty gritty with 6 girls left, everyone assumed Javine would be the first name on the band teamsheet - best singer, best performer, it was a dead cert. And then suddenly, she was voted out! There was a national outrage amongst the general public, even though they were the very people who had voted her off.

None of this matters now. Javine slipped quietly away from the spotlight, took stock of her life, and now, almost a year on, is ready to launch a solo career. Signed up by Innocent Records, a single, ’Real Things’ is due out soon with an album planned for the autumn.

We caught up with Javine for a chat to see how she was feeling about the first steps of her solo career...

MV: We’ve only heard a clip of your single, ’Real Things’ - and it sounds like it’s got a nice American RnB feel to it. Can you tell us a bit about it in your own words?
JH: Maybe you think that because part of the song is sampled from the MOP track ’Ante Up’. That’s probably why it feels like it has an American vibe, but I actually wrote the song in Norway funnily enough - with Stargate.

MV: They’re good people to get in with! So how did that come about?
JH: Innocent, my record label works with a lot of their artists and they had the whole idea worked out before I even got there. Then we just wrote the song together.

Biography

Born on 27th December 1981 Javine Hylton grew up in Ladbroke Grove with her mother and sister. Taking the performing arts route through school she soon fond work in pop videos for The Cardigans, Tom Jones, The Honeyz and Damage.

A role in the stage version of The Lion King followed, in which Javine spent two years, honing her skills in singing and dancing by night whilst studying in the daytime. This was when opportunity came knocking - a local audition for Popstars, The Rivals - she was hugely popular with audiences and made it in to the final six, narrowly missing out on a place in Girls Aloud.

Luckily Javine’s talents had been noted and she was offered a record deal with Innocent, sharing a label with Blue and Atomic Kitten. Her debut single Real Things reached number four in the charts and gained massive radio play. However, Javine’s releases have been largely ignored and despite much press attention surrounding her Eurovision attempt she remains very much out of the spotlight.  She has now moved in to musical theatre, appearing in Daddy Cool.
