Peter
Mandelson - A Biography
Mandy's
Misdemenours
Age: 40s
Worth: An MP's salary of £47,000
Day job: Disgraced ex-minister and MP for Hartlepool
Distinguishing features: A lupine grin and slicked-back inky
hair characterise the Prince of Darkness, who cloaks his immaculate
silhouette in suits from Oswald Boateng
Lives: Kensington
Spotted: Aswell as being a regular feature
in the local media and political arena local resident 'Mandy' can
be spotted in and around 'da Hill working the treadmill at Lambton
Place; browsing through 'girly chic' boutique 'The Cross; shopping
for incense and candles with his close friend, Reinaldo da Silva,
in Venice or Rio.
Friends: Trevor Phillips, James Palumbo, Stephen Fry, Elisabeth
Murdoch, Tom and Nicole, Lord Alli.
Or rather, he used to be - time will tell.
Toys: A career in tatters; a garden of roses, which inspired
New Labour's logo; Bobby, his golden retriever, and Jack, his Parson's
terrier, who have their own John Prescott doll to gnaw.
Important facts: The man who told Tony to 'kill your enemies
with cream', underwent a serious a rebrand following his early years
as a bri-nylon product of Hampstead Garden Suburb. While his ability
to manipulate the mob was apparent from his playground days at Hendon
Grammar School (he apparently had fellow pupils chanting 'PM for
PM'), his fashion sense was less assured and early photos reveal
a taxman's moustache and a scout's reliance on short-sleeved shirts.
The king of spin came unstuck last year when it emerged that he'd
borrowed undeclared funds to buy his house, so he resigned from
the cabinet. After a cooling-off period, Blair reinstated him as
Northern Ireland Secretary. However the glory was short-lived and
within a year another lie had come to light, forcing Mandy to resign
over the passports-for-cash issue. These days Mandy's partner, Reinaldo,
is an erudite twentysomething from Rio who speaks seven languages
and studies Japanese at SOAS.
Extras: He was voted number nine in the top ten chart of
Britains Best Groomed Men. In just January 2001 - Mandy got 25%
more column inches than his entire total for 2000 - beating old
Tone hands down. Mandy is believed to shave his hands.
