Libel win for Martine - 19/02/03
Martine McCutcheon has accepted substantial undisclosed libel damages over an article about alleged unpaid commission.
An article published in the Mirror in April 2001 (under the headline Martine’s Cash Tiff) implied she had tried to avoid payment of a debt by claiming she was more owed against than owing.
Martine was in dispute with former manager Claire Powell at the time. In the article a lawyer for Can International Ltd - agent for both women - suggested that Martine (who was not in court) lied about being a creditor to cover up the fact she owed Powell money.
Coming clean before the High Court the lawyer, the agent and the manager all accepted the article was defamatory leaving Martine singing all the way to the bank!
