The complaint alleges that Richie, the daughter of pop singer Lionel Richie, was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and an unspecified drug, said prosecution spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons.

CHP Officer Todd Workman said that at the time Richie volunteered information that she had smoked marijuana and taken the prescription painkiller Vicodin, but no drugs were found on her or in the car.

Richie starred with Paris Hilton in reality show The Simple Life.

The next hearding is scheduled for February 21.

Nicole Richie has reportedly confessed that she’s worried about going to prison following her arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The Simple Life star told best pal Paris Hilton she’s terrified that the charges against her will land her in jail, according to America’s Life & Style Weekly magazine.

The socialites were dining at LA’s swanky Mr Chow restaurant when the slender star confided in Paris, reports MSNBC.

"She was really freaking out," an insider told the mag. "Paris kept telling Nicole not to worry, that everything was going to be fine."

Nicole was arrested on December 11. California Highway Patrol officers took the 25-year-old daughter of pop singer Lionel Richie into custody after she failed an on-the-spot test in Burbank.

Her black Mercedes sports utility vehicle was stopped in the car pool lane of State Highway 134 when officers arrived.

Nicole reportedly has a previous DUI charge from 2002 and California law states that a repeat offence carries the mandatory jail sentence of five days.

The romance between Nicole Richie and Good Charlotte singer Joel Madden is heating up. Not only were the new couple spotted snogging on New Year’s Eve, but they have been snapped lapping up the sunshine in Mexico.

Nicole is obviously trying to put her recent driving travails aside, after she was stopped by police bombing down the wrong side of the freeway, apparently under the influence of marijuana and Vicodin.

Joel is also attempting to move on after the break-up of his longtime romance with Hilary Duff, which finished at the end of last year.

Nic and Joel were seen in celeb hotspot Puerto Vallarta, looking every inch the Hollywood couple, the former still thin in hippy chic.

After settling in, the pair then headed to a beachside bar where they tucked into drinks. Let’s hope that they are able to walk back to their hotel after their tipple.

It seems party girl Nicole Richie could facing jail time if she’s convicted of driving under the influence.

The Simple Life star, who was arrested in the US on Monday, reportedly has a prior arrest from 2002 when she pleaded no contest to drink-driving and got three years probation.

In California, a second driving under the influence conviction means a mandatory five-day stint in prison - and Nicole was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence on Monday.

California Highway Patrol officers took the 25-year-old daughter of pop singer Lionel Richie into custody after she failed an on-the-spot test in Burbank.

Her black Mercedes sports utility vehicle was stopped in the car pool lane of State Highway 134 when officers arrived.

Authorities said they did get emergency calls about a car going the wrong way on the freeway and the vehicle matched the description of Nicole’s.

Biography

Nicole Richie was born on September 21, 2020 in Berkeley, California. She was informally adopted by Lionel Richie and his wife, Brenda Harvey-Richie in 1984, and formally adopted into the family six years later (her biological father is assumed to be Richie’s former drummer, and her mother a backstage tour assistant). Her godfather is Michael Jackson.
The subsequent split between Lionel and Brenda led to Nicole descending into drug abuse and a string of arrests. She eventually admitted her dependency and, in 2003, she was admitted into a drug rehabilitation unit.

Around the same time, Nicole was in the limelight on the series that would propel her into the mainstream, ‘The Simple Life’, co-starring with Paris Hilton. The future of the show, which was built on the idea of their close friendship, was put in jeopardy when the pair fell out in 2005. The split was rumored to be caused by Richie showing a copy of Hilton’s ‘One Night In Paris’ sex tape at a social gathering, or her jealousy of Hilton’s rising public profile. In any case, the split was prolonged and dramatic, with tracks on Hilton’s debut album being dedicated to admonishing their former friendship. Although the show continued, the pair stipulated that they did not want to appear on screen together.

She is currently dating American reality TV star and family friend Brody Jenner.
A proportion of her media profile is given over to speculation surrounding her body weight. Despite repeated assertions that she does not struggle with an eating disorder and that she is “naturally skinny”, she finally admitted herself into a private facility for the treatment of Bulimia on October 26.

Keen to prove that she is more than a media curiosity, she is currently working to release her debut album and is trying to break into acting.
