Princes greeted by standing ovation - July 1 2007
Prince Harry kicked off the Concert for Diana with the words: "Hello, Wembley!"

William and brother Harry took to the stage in front of a 63,000-strong crowd at Wembley Stadium at the start of the special event they have organised in memory of their mother, on what would have been her 46th birthday.

Sir Elton John opened the event with a performance of Your Song before introducing the two princes, who entered to a standing ovation.

"This event is about all that our mother loved in life - her music, her dancing, her charities and her family and friends," said William, 25. "We just want you to have an awesome time and enjoy the line-up."

Harry said: "It’s great to see so many of you here supporting this very special show."

And the 22-year-old royal couldn’t resist cracking a gag.

"When William and I first had the idea we forgot we would end up standing here desperately trying to think of something funny to say. We’ll leave that to the funny people - and Ricky Gervais," he quipped.

The princes were watched by Harry’s girlfriend Chelsy Davy and William’s former girlfriend Kate Middleton, who helped them to organise the event.

The concert marks the 10th anniversary of Diana’s death and features a line-up of acts including Lily Allen, Take That, Kanye West and Sir Tom Jones.

The princes introduced one of their mother’s favourite bands, Eighties heart-throbs Duran Duran, before taking their seats in the royal box.

Princes pay tribute to Diana - June 14 2007
Prince William and Prince Harry have paid tribute to their mother Diana, Princess of Wales, saying no amount of words can convey how wonderful she was.

The royal brothers were interviewed by television and Radio 1 presenter Fearne Cotton for the BBC, ahead of their concert in memory of the Princess.

William said the celebration on July 1 at Wembley Stadium was to remember the good things she did and to counter the "rumbling of people bringing up the bad" over the last 10 years.

Harry talked about how he treasured the private memories they had of her, especially when she is being criticised.

"The memories that we’ve got of her, we’re very lucky to have because they’re private between us," he said.

"That’s the nicest thing about it, as you see her get slated for such and such, but the personal memories that we have of her are very much private and that’s where hopefully it’ll always be."

William spoke about defending Diana’s memory and said the concert was for her.

"Hopefully it would be one of those things that she would absolutely adore because the whole point is, this is for her - it’s not for any other reason," William said.

"We want this year to go by and for people to remember all those good things she did."

Biography

Prince Henry Charles Albert Mountbatten-Windsor, more commonly known as Prince Harry, was born on September 15 1984, the son of heir to the throne, Charles, Prince of Wales and his wife, Diana.  Although they did not divorce until 2006, it is rumoured that Harry’s parents had been effectively seperated soon after his birth.  In 1997, when Harry was just thirteen, Diana was killed in a car accident.  The incident proved to be the first real show of interest in the lives of Harry and his brother, Prince William.

Educated at Eton College in Berkshire Harry gained two A levels in Geography and Art.  Although he was an unimpressive scholar he did show an aptitude for sport, in particular rugby and polo.  After completing his studies he spent a gap year in Australia and Africa working at a cattle station and at an orphanage in Lesotho.

His break over, Harry followed in the footsteps of many members of the Windsor family by enrolling at Sandhurst Military Academy in 2005.  At the academy he was referred to as Officer Cadet Wales and was part of the Alamein Company.  He passed out in April 2006, announcing that he would join the Blues and Royals and train as a reconnissance troop commander.  He is expected to ship out to Iraq in May 2007.

Prince Harry has been involved in several controversies over the years, garnering public criticism for his decision to attend a fancy dress party dressed as a Nazi two weeks before Holocaust Memorial Day.  He has also been involed in a scuffle with a paprazzi photographer and admitted to smoking cannabis.  His behaviour, which to many reflects that of any young man, has seen him and his group of friends criticised for being ’content with a life of privilege.’

Linked with several young women of his social circle Harry has a regular girlfriend in the shape of South African heiress Chelsy Davy.
