Named after the Cheers and Frasier screenwriter who died in the Sept 11th attacks the award honours entertainers who contribute to the humanitarian cause. Sting was chosen to receive the honour for his work for charities ranging from Live Aid to Amnesty International, the Rainforest Foundation and the Elton John AIDs foundation.
Sting’s charity meal - May 04
A lunch hosted in honour of Sting saw hundreds of thousands of pounds raised for the Variety Club charity.
An auction held during the launch saw Sting give away a holiday in his luxury Tuscan mansion, raising £60,000 on its own. One of Jools Holland’s socks also raised an astounding £1,300. Also auctioned off was a days work as an extra on Auf Weidersehen, Pet which raised £10,000 thanks to star of the show Tim Healy starting off the bidding himself. During the event Sting vowed that he would be back to fulfille the Arena date he had to cancel while suffering with laryngitis.
Sting ’frantic’ not tantric - May 04
Sting has said that the rumours that he and wife Trudie Styler practised tantric sex were a joke.
The singer told the BBC in an interview to be aired next week that he is ’more frantic than tantric’. He says that the rumour came about from a conversation he had at a dinner party with Bob Geldof and Bono from U2 and it just "spread like a forest fire".

Hip hop Sting - April 04
Sting has recorded with hip hop star Twista for an upcoming single.
It may be part of his quest for eternal youth or an attempt to appear less boring but Sting has collaborated with Twista on his latest single Stolen Car (Take Me Dancing). The pair have just finished making the video for the track in Brooklyn. An original version of the song appears on Sting’s album, Sacred Love, but he chose to have the track remixed for its release on April 26th.
Too much information - April 04
Sting has once again put the nation off of their dinner with new revelations about his sex life.
The dour Geordie’s wife Trudie Styler has revealed that she and her husband are big fans of sharing, taking part in threesomes and wife swapping in their spare time. Trudie shocked even Howard Stern in a phone interview with the American shock jock, telling him that Sting likes to go to sex clubs to get his rocks off while "I just sort of hang out and talk to them, and polish my nails."

Childhood memory Stings - 03/11/03
Sting’s new autobiography states that it was the memory of walking in on his mother’s affair with the milkman that drove him to music.
He claims that turning to music helped him cope with his emotions and started playing the piano. Sting added: "Without the piano an outlet, I might well have become delinquent. God knows I had the contacts."
Sting’s new autobiography is called Broken Music.

Sting demonstrated he was still as bendy as ever, during an appearance on the Jonathan Ross show...
He happily showed off one of his yoga moves, by balancing on his head with his legs in the lotus position. Once back upright - he made a joking reference to himself and a much quoted comment ’I do yoga every day for one and a half hours and eight hours of love making in the evening’

The Police established him as a world-renowned songwriter and singer: with Outlandos D’Amour, Reggatta De Blanc, Zenyatta Mondatta, Ghost in the Machine, Synchronicity and a clutch of live and best-of sets, the trio Sting headed assumed the vanguard of contemporary music throughout the late ’70s and early ’80s. Solo albums include: The Dream of the Blue Turtles, Bring on the Night, . Nothing Like the Sun, The Soul Cages, Ten Summoner’s Tales, Mercury Falling and Brand New Day.
Sting is known for his work in the field of human rights. He remains active in causes as various as ecology , Amnesty International and founded the Rainforest Foundation with his second wife - Trudie Styler. He has appeared in various films, including the brilliant Quadrophenia, and had a guest part in Guy Richie’s Lock Stock. In fact, Sting and his wife famously introduced Guy and Madonna at a dinner party at their house. Madonna was seated next to Guy and she has said ’My head didn’t just turn, it span full circle on my body.’
As well as having six children (two by his first wife Frances - and four with current wife Trudie) he is also a fan of yoga and once famously talked about his love of tantric sex! These days Sting and his family live in Wiltshire, and also spend time in their London base in Highgate and their New York apartment. So he is an ’Englishman in New York’ after all!
