The Beatles

The Beatles

In Liverpool George Martin liked The Beatles, but didn’t think Pete’s drumming was much good. He suggested a session drummer, but a Liverpudlian drummer had already sat in for Pete on quite a few occasions, and his sense of humour fitted right in with the rest of the lads. Ringo Starr was in, and Pete Best was out that August.

Love Me Do was released in October of that year and went to number 17 in the charts. However Please Please Me released in January and blew everyone away as it went straight to number one. Beatlemania was just about to sweep the world, and The Beatles era had started.

From 1963 to 1968 every Beatles release shot to number one in the UK. The Beatles symbolised everything about the sixties, and for the first few years they lived life in a bubble, from hotel room to car to venue and back again. They toured around the world, conquered America and set the scene for many other bands, such as The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and many others. The Beatles quit touring in 1966, at Candlestick Park in America. No-one was to ever see them play as a band again, apart from some lucky employees on a windy roof-top in 1968. They went into Abbey Road Studio’s, and emerged skinnier with their masterpeice Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band.

The Beatles explored many new avenues and instruments, but no-one could prevent the breaking up of the band in April 1970. It got too much for them all, having lived through the decade with all its ups and downs. Both Paul and John wanted to see what they could do on their own for a while, and with their resepective spouses, Linda McCartney and Yoko Ono. The break up was drawn out and messy, with Ringo, George and John threatening to quit over the last few years, only to be coaxed back by Paul. However it was Paul who finally had enough, and threw in the towel. The Beatles finances were involved and messy, and Paul had to resort to sueing the rest of the band in order to sort out who was owed what.
