The Beatles
- Profession: Band
- Place/Date of Birth: Liverpool, 1960–1970
- Associated with: George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr
The statue is the work of the pop singer Tommy Steele and was meant as a tribute to the Beatles and as a "Thank You" to the people of Liverpool for all the happy times he’d spent in the city. Eleanor was unveiled to the world on the 3rd December 1982 by Tommy when he explained he had placed a number of objects inside the figure, "so she would be full of magical properties". Eleanor Rigby is still in Liverpool. She can be found sitting on a bench in Stanley Street, only a stone’s throw away from Mathew Street. A plaque next to the monument dedicates it ’To All The Lonely People’.
JOHN LENNON STATUE
This statue of John is just across from the Cavern Club and outside the Cavern Pub. It was unveiled on the 16th January 1997.
It is a representation of the cover of John’s 1975 album, "Rock ’n’ Roll" Each of the bricks carries the name of one of the 1,801 bands and artists who played the original Cavern.
THE CAVERN CLUB
The Beatles made the Cavern Club famous, playing nearly 300 shows between February 1961 and August 1963 in the cellar club on tiny Mathew Street in downtown Liverpool. The Cavern closed in 1973 and was demolished in a particularly brilliant feat of civic planning. A reconstructed Cavern Club opened a decade later in 1984, built to the specifications of the original and occupying part of the orignal site (the remainder is lost forever beneath the neighboring parking lot). It is now a major tourist attraction and still a venue for local bands.
THE GRAPES
Beatles’ bar damaged by fire - 02/01/04
A fire has damaged The Grapes pub, which was one of the favourite haunts of The Beatles.
The Grapes on Mathew Street was the place The Beatles would go to have a drink after a gig at the Cavern club, also once on the same street. But rubbish in the street caught light and the pub suffered smoke and property damage in the ensuing fire.
Lennon’s, which is a bar next to The Grapes was worst hit, and it is not sure if the fire was started deliberately or from a discarded cigarette.
The Grapes was a favorite Beatle hangout, located a few doors down Mathew Street from the Cavern (which was not allowed to sell alchohol!!) The Beatles would often retreat to The Grapes before or after Cavern sets - for some much needed alcohol.
