The 25-year-old singer, famous for hits including Superstar and Something About You, "doubled up in pain" while on set for a Spanish music programme in Madrid on Thursday.

She rushed back to the UK to see doctors who diagnosed an "umbilical hernia", a hereditary condition that causes pain around the stomach area.

On Friday night, at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, she underwent micro surgery, her manager Jonathan Shalit said.

He added that she hoped to recover in time to perform with Meat Loaf at the Royal Variety Performance on December 4.

He said: "She was in Spain on Thursday night performing on one of the biggest Spanish TV music shows when she suddenly doubled up in pain.

"She described it as like ’a bus had hit her stomach’.

"She saw a doctor on the set but decided to fly home where she went to St Mary’s Hospital and was examined.

"They said she had an umbilical hernia, a hereditary condition that is also related to the after effect of having children.

Jamelia has two young girls, one of whom is the daughter of her boyfriend, Millwall footballer Darren Byfield.

Jamelia had been in Spain to promote her new single Beware Of The Dog, which is due out on December 4.

Jamelia censors Lily’s album - Sept 15, 2020
Pop star Jamelia is apparently having a child-friendly copy of Lily Allen’s Smile made for her five-year-old daughter, Teja. The singer, who is also mum to 10-month-old Tiani, has had all mentions of drugs ands sex removed from the tracks, so she can let her youngster listen to it.

The 24-year-old songstress, who shares a record label with outspoken Lily, told The Daily Star: "Teja’s really into Lily’s singles so I’m getting a clean album, only for personal purposes. It’s a perk of being on the same label.

"I think Lily’s wicked. She’s enjoying being young and it’s refreshing. It would be lovely if she didn’t change but there are some things on the album that aren’t suitable for young ears."

The singer’s oldest kid has apparently already been asking questions about drugs. "Teja was being crazy and someone asked her if she was on drugs. I did reprimand them. If you don’t have children you don’t understand," she said. "I told her some people do this but I don’t agree with it."

Jamelia performed live for the first time in two years - Aug 25, 2006
Stunning singer Jamelia performed live for the first time in two years - and it seems she got complete and utter stage-fright.
The R&B star was so nervous about singing in front of the cameras that she forgot the words to her songs nine times, according to The Sun. And at one point, she had to take ten minutes out of the show, reportedly to pull herself together.

Introducing her favourite song - Coldplay classic Clocks - she told the crowds at the AOL Sessions gig in London: "This song is beautiful, so I’m going to perform it." But after six attempts, she had to give up and take a break. The hit singer did eventually come back to do it properly, however.

"I just kept forgetting the words," Jamelia later told the paper. "I wanted to cry. My boyfriend Darren was giving me grief, telling me to hurry up as he was missing the Arsenal game." The 24-year-old singer has recently been spending more time with her footballer partner and her two daughters Teja and Tiani.

Biography

Jamelia Niela Davis was born to a Jamaican mother and Zimbabwean father and raised in Birmingham’s Winson Green.

Signed to Parlaphone aged just fifteen, Jamelia impressed record execs with a tape of self penned songs sung a-capella.  Her first single, So High, was released in 1999 but it failed to chart while follow up, I Do, entered the charts but at a low position.  Still just eighteen Jamelia released an album, Drama, which peaked at 39 in the charts and produced the single Money which went top five and earned the singer five MOBO nominations.

Taking time out to look after her baby daughter Teja, born in 2001, Jamelia returned to music in 2003, releasing Thank You, which stuck at number 65 in the album charts.  However, despite this disappointment the accompanying single, Superstar, gave her a taste fo true pop stardom.  Jamelia’s singles continued to chart well and before long she was also signed up to model for Pretty Polly and Reebok.

Three MOBO awards and three Brit nominations later Jamelia gave birth to a second daughter, Tiani, fathered by footballer Darren Byfield.

Her third album, Walk With Me, was released in 2006 and featured some quality collaborations and produced some reasonably successful singles, among them Something About You and Beware of the Dog.

Jamelia is a high profile campaigner for animal rights charity PETA and HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns with proceeds of her own fragrance donated to the cause.
