Lucian Freud’s portrait of Kate Moss is sold for £3.9m. The now infamous artwork, featuring a naked and pregnant Kate Moss, has made a whopping £3.9m at auction. A furious bidding war ended with an anonymous phone bidder nabbing themselves what is now Freud’s most famous work at Christies auction house. More than 600 art lovers turned out to see the painting go on sale and were surprised to see it overshadowed by another work by the artist - A Red-haired Man on a Chair - which fetched more than £4m, the highest price paid so far for a Freud work.

Lucian Freud’s Kate Moss portrait is to go under the hammer tomorrow. The infamous artist painted Kate Moss, probably Britain’s most famous model, in 2002 when she was pregnant with daughter Lila and now, in one of the most eagerly awaited sales in Christies’ history, the painting is to go under the hammer. The painting was unveiled earlier this week to great public interest and is expected to fetch around £3.5m for the seller - a collector who purchased it directly from the artists. It is also assumed that Moss herself will be putting in a bid on the portrait, having been outbid on it before.

Freud’s 2002 Kate Moss portrait is worth an estimated £3million. The life size portrait of a naked and pregnant Kate Moss, painted in 2002 is to be auctioned next February in a specialist art auction and could be the most expensive painting Freud has worked on. Having been left out of Freud’s Tate retrospective the painting has not been shown to the public previously but nonetheless is one of the artist’s most famous works and is expected to start a furious bidding war when it goes under the hammer. Rumour has it that Kate herself has her eye on the painting - she missed out on buying it when it was originally completed.

A painting by British artist Lucian Freud has emerged as the top-selling postcard at the Tate Britain in London in 2002.

Freud’s Girl With White Dog has been a big seller after the gallery ran a three-month retrospective of Freud’s work.

The painting, which is 50 years old, shows the artist’s first wife Kitty Epstein lying with her left breast exposed and a dog on her lap.

Kate Moss was revealed to the world in all her pregnant glory this weekend, when Lucian Freud unveiled his nude portrait of her. Entitled Naked Portrait 2002, the painting is thought to be on its way to the artist’s dealer in New York.

Friends of Kate, however, say that she is keen to keep the portrait, which is worth in the region of £1 million and was painted during a sequence of late night sittings throughout her pregnancy.


Lucian Freud, was born 8 December 2020 in Berlin, a grandson of Sigmund Freud, he came to England with his parents in 1931, and acquired British nationality in 1939. He began to work full time as an artist after being invalided out of the Merchant Navy in 1942.

In 1938/39 Freud studied at the Central School of Arts in London; from 1939 to 1942 at the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in Debham run by Cedric Morris; in 1942/43 at Goldsmiths’ College, London (part-time).
