Kielty did not jeopardise Belfast culture bid - 29/11/02

Patrick Kielty has laughed off accusations that he jeopardised Belfast’s City of Culture bid as "absolutely ridiculous and laughable".

The television presenter, currently hosting BBC’s Fame Academy, was accused of threatening the city’s unsuccessful campaign with a joke he pulled for the Patrick Kielty Almost Live programme.

The Dundrum comic came under fire after European Capital of Culture judges touring the city were greeted with the sight of a group of young Irish dancers, dressed in full regalia, jigging on every street corner they turned.

Kielty told the Belfast Telegraph "I would never show Northern Ireland or Belfast in a bad light. What we did was a bit of fun. "If anything the show has upped the profile of Belfast. Viewers have taken a real interest in Belfast’s bid and people have come up to me in the street to ask me how the city was getting on with it."

Biography

Patrick Kielty was born and raised a Roman Catholic in County Down, Northern Ireland.  Affected by The Troubles from a young age Kielty's father, Businessman Jack Kielty, was murdered by the Ulster Freedom Fighters despite having no ties to any political paramilitary groups himself.

However, Patrick used this tragedy to the advantage of his career later in life.  As a student at Queen's University he became a popular regular on the local stand up scene.  His gigs at The Empire pub often saw him don a balaclava and make comedy paramilitary speeches.

This was just the beginning of a career in the spotlight and in 1993 Patrick was offered a presenting gig on UTV's SUS.  Soon after he became the warm up man for BBC Northern Ireland's popular Anderson on the Box, proving so popular that when the show was axed it was replaced with Patrick's own PK Tonight.

Noticed by London Producers Patrick was shipped to Britain after a year of PK Tonight, and he was given Last Chance Lottery and Patrick Kielty Almost Live, which have led to Patrick becoming one of British TV's most watched presenters working on Love Island and Fame Academy most notably.

The presenter has also returned to stand up, touring the UK in 2006.

Patrick has previously been linked to Irish presenter Amanda Byram.  He jokes that their relationship received cross border funding.
