Borat set for red carpet - Oct 25 2006
Controversial character Borat is expected to amuse fans and anger protesters in central London tonight when he attends the premiere of his new film.
The fictional Kazakhstani television presenter, played by British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, stars in the movie Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan.
Many Kazakhs believe that spoof journalist Borat has done serious damage to the reputation of the Central Asian nation.
The film will make its UK premiere at the London Film Festival in Leicester Square at 6pm tonight.
It follows the journey of Borat as he is dispatched to the US by the Kazakh Ministry of Information to learn about American culture.
Borat is supposedly a reporter from his country’s state-run TV network and is described as "Kazkhstan’s sixth most famous man".
And British fans could be in for an unpredictable show outside the Odeon cinema tonight, as Sacha turned up at the Toronto Film Festival last month in a cart pulled by six peasant women.
The character has claimed that most people in Kazakhstan travel in wooden carts pulled by female peasants, that wine is made of horse urine, and that there is a popular folk song called Throw The Jew Down The Well.
The government of Kazakhstan initially objected to Ali G star Sacha’s depiction of the country in the film.
But officials recently changed tack and invited the comedian to visit Kazakhstan.
Another Sacha Storm - Aug 06
Sacha Baron Cohen is to stranger to controversy and it comes as no surprise to hear that his latest movie, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, is causing outrage. The film which follows popular charcter Borat as he investigates the US has seen Baron Cohen face another round of criticism. Viewers have been outraged at teasing levelled at Jews (Sacha himself is Jewish) while those at the receiving end of his pranks are also annoyed at being made to look foolish.
Ali G star Sacha Baron Cohen is facing legal action for mocking Kazakhstan - Nov 15, 2020
Ali G star Sacha Baron Cohen is facing legal action for mocking Kazakhstan. The comic is famous for playing ill-fated Kazakh TV reporter Borat in his ’Da Ali G Show’ - and has portrayed his homeland as full of drunks who enjoy punching cows.
Earlier this month, the 34-year-old hosted the star-studded MTV Europe Music Awards in Lisbon as Borat. Thousands of viewers saw the star pretend to arrive in an ’Air Kazakh’ propeller plane flown by a pilot clutching a vodka bottle. Now the Kazakh Foreign Ministry has said it may move to prevent Cohen presenting the country in a "derogatory way".

At Cambridge, he got a History degree and did his thesis on Black and Jewish cultures. Fascinating. Best known for his Ali G character, aficionados think that his Kazakhstani TV presenter character Borat Karabzhanov is much funnier. Apart from that we’re all waiting to see what he’ll do next.
