The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is supporting
Westminster Council's legal challenge to the Mayor of London's Congestion
Charging Scheme.
The Royal Borough will be offering to give evidence
in court on the likely impact of the congestion charging scheme.
Other measures to ensure the Royal Borough's voice is heard in the
case will go before the Council's Cabinet for approval on the 30th
May.
Councillor Daniel Moylan, Deputy Leader and Cabinet
Member for the Environment said, "The Mayor is planning a massive
change without properly informing himself and Londoners as to the
consequences for our environment.
"Not only has his consultation process been deeply
flawed, the scheme itself is flawed because there has been no proper
assessment of its effect on traffic and on air quality. These effects
are bigger in the Royal Borough than elsewhere and we will be giving
evidence to this effect. He must think again."
The Royal Borough is demanding an environmental
impact assessment of the scheme and, if the Mayor is intent on driving
the scheme through, that he should include the Royal Borough in
the congestion charging zone and provide 90% discount to residents
and businesses affected by it.
