Victoria Glover is the Event and Sponsorship Manager from Sue Ryder Care, which is a charity that supports the care services for people living with conditions including Multiple Sclerosis, Huntington’s Disease and Cancer. Sue Ryder Care are inviting people to limber up for a unique 5k running event in May called Beat The Baton, which will have live music by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Anthony Inglis. We spoke to her to find out more about this…

When organising this fun run, what made you think of teaming the event with Anthony and the RPA?

Well we wanted to create the event as a real sort of atmospheric event, so therefore the whole live music, and nothing better came to mind than something like a full piece orchestra and in particular the Royal Philharmonic, and obviously Anthony is well-known so we were absolutely excited that he was really involved in the project.

And how to people sign up to Beat the Baton?

Ok there’s several ways that you can do this, the best way is to actually go online, www.suerydercare.org and you can actually sign up with them directly.  You can phone our special hotline on 0845 050 1953 or we actually are at a variety of train stations and shopping centres over the coming month and where people can actually ask for more information or sign up directly, so we’re at Eden Walk Shopping centre in Kingston, we’re at Euston train station in London Bridge, Brent Cross shopping centre, Kings Cross, Liverpool street, all over the capital really.

What sort of ability will be needed to take part – can anyone join in?

Yes – the course is suitable for people of all ages and abilities, if you’re under 16 we do like you to be accompanied with an adult, but if you are worried I would check with your GP before signing up for the race, but we are encouraging as many people to come as possible.

And finally will people be able to go along to listen to the orchestra if they’re not running?

Yes the more the merrier, you know we want to cheer – not only is the orchestra sort of getting behind the runners, we want people to cheer the runners on as well, you know this is something very new and if they come and see what’s going on they’ll sign up for the following year, so yes we’re encouraging as many people to come down and enjoy the event.

Beat The Baton takes place in Battersea Park on Monday 28th May 2007
