Ooo I know all these, I think happily as I slip the CD into my player. Sadly, this is because I am OLD and therefore have a vague whiff of nostalgia clouding my judgement. My two younger colleagues, Chris and Priya, are visibly less enthusiastic. ’Oh, this is like old skool’ says Priya. ’Cheesy’ proclaims Chris. I wilt under the weight of my 31 years, but before I know it, my foot is tapping away to Shamen, S’Express and Josh Wink. Who’d have thought the words ‘foot tapping’ and Josh Wink would go in the same sentence eh? That is like waltzing to Prodigy. However… ageism aside, the first CD is not exactly stuffed full of choons I would call floorfillers. No one would call Brothers In Rhythm ‘Such A Good Feeling’ a floor filler surely? Same goes for Suzanne Vega’s ‘Tom’s Diner’ – have the compilers of this compilation ever tried to actually dance to that song? Not so much a floor ‘filler’ but time to go to the bar.
Moving on to CD2 and we get lifted by the presence of Faithless’s ‘Insomnia’ and Fat Boy Slim’s ‘Right Here Right Now’ but a few tracks on and we are in danger of slipping into Gina Gee territory. Living Joy’s ‘Don’t Stop Moving’ especially feels like we are veering into the danger zone. I quickly scan the tracks, wondering if indeed the Gee’d one is creeping in somewhere. But no we are safe. That is obviously a treat saved for Floorfiller Anthems 2.
CD3 and the room is starting to droop. Still we rally for a few more tunes but then remember radio Five Live is starting its movie run down of the week and unanimously decide to switch over to that instead.
