Seafood - Lovesong / I'll Be There in the Morning
Release date: Out now
Format: Single
Genre: Indie
Our Rating: 3/5
British indie rock quartet Seafood’s latest release is a lovely, lilting, lo-fi treat. Lovesong is a cover of The Cure’s unforgettably beautiful hit and while Seafood’s version is almost as pretty, it’s also disappointingly similar; I can’t think why you’d want to listen to this over The Cure’s haunting original. I must confess to being an enormous Cure fan and thus it’s admittedly hard to be impartial, but maximum respect to Seafood in that I almost like their version as much.
I’ll Be Here in the Morning is a smooth cover of the Townes Van Zandt classic that melts in the ears. It’s not a million miles from the original, but it has something extra and ethereal, it’s almost as though they’ve picked the gravel and dust out of TVZ’s version and then dipped it in chocolate. The result will keep me hitting the repeat button for some time to come. I’m not sure Seafood score very highly for unique interpretation on either track, but who cares, these covers are truly delicious.
