Handy Squad Winter Tips
Think you’re ready for winter? You’ve no doubt noticed how worryingly cold it’s been getting lately, but there are some very simple ways to combat the icy chill of winter in your home. The Fulham-based handyman company, The Handy Squad, have put together a top ten checklist for keeping bills down and the precious heat in this winter:
Some easy do it yourself options…
1. Oil all the locks so they don’t seize up in the cold – you can buy WD40 with a long straw attached so you can access the insides of locks easily
2. Change from normal light bulbs to low wattage bulbs to help keep the bills down and do your bit for the environment
3. De-clutter around radiators to ensure you’re getting the maximum heat exposure
4. Check your Christmas tree lights work BEFORE putting them on the tree
5. Use drawing pins instead of blu-tack to put up Christmas cards – blu-tack will mark the paintwork. If you don’t have filler to fill in the pin holes, use a tiny bit of rolled up bread
And some which might require some Handy Squad help…
6. Install draught proofing around doors and windows to keep the heat in and save on fuel bills
7. Reseal around baths and shower trays – there are more leaks in winter time so you should try to prevent any that are easily avoidable
8. Bleed your radiators – this can make a big improvement to the heat output
9. Clear out fallen leaves from drains to avoid blockages
10. Shave down sticking doors which may have expanded in the wet weather
