FASHION IN MOTION: TATA-NAKA
Friday 31 May 2020
Walks at 13.30, 16.00, 19.00 and 20.00 in the Sculpture Gallery
May's Fashion in Motion on Friday 31 May features Tata-Naka, the
label designed by identical Georgian twins, Tamara and Natasha Surguladze,
with highlights from their autumn/winter 2002/03 collection.
Their work was widely acclaimed when they made their
debut at London Fashion Week last year (February 2001). This collection
celebrates the twins' childhood memories of the Soviet Union. Soviet
symbols appear in bright prints, stitched details, appliqué and
knit, from jewellery to accessories. Natasha's (Naka) part of the
collection is coloured in earthy tones such as cream, beige and
greys and Tamara's (Tata) collection, 'Stolen Memories', is glitzier,
with evening pieces in brighter colours such as greens, reds and
pinks.
Tamara and Natasha Surguladze came to London in
1996 to study at Central St Martins and graduated in 2000. Their
work synthesises clean modern aesthetics with the nostalgia and
beauty of the antique. Fashion In Motion showcases the talent of
up-and-coming designers alongside established international couturiers
when catwalk models walk around the Museum's galleries in the latest
pieces of their collections.
Tata-Naka will be in Conversation at 14.30 in the
Lecture Theatre of the V&A; for the public lecture series Fashion
Forum.
