Rough
Trade at the V&A; |
|
Never mind London Fashion Week, the party to be
at this week is Rough Trade's 25th Anniversary launch bash at the
Victoria & Albert Museum in Kensington on Friday 23rd February.
Entertaining the schmoozers & celebs will be DJ sets courtesy of
Pulp, People Like Us, Stereolab DJs, and Rough Trade DJs (of course!).
Magnetophone will perform a special live set to visuals by long
time 4AD graphic collaborators V23.
The Twisted Nerve crew (though no word of the Badly Drawn One) will
be bringing their badselves all the way down to London from Manchester,
having confirmed DJ sets from Andy Votel and Mum and Dad, plus DOT
live and more acts to be announced.
Also keep em peeled for info on some very VERY special guests (all
very hush hush) who will be taking their turn at 'something' during
the soiree's proceedings.

Mods
Return |
|
If, like me, you've seen that rubber-lipped, super-chef
come pseudo-mod, Jamie Oliver dashing up and down Tottenham Court
Road on his moped, Fishtail Parka flapping behind him in the breeze,
and wanted very much to clobber him over the head with a blunt instrument,
'The In Crowd', might be just what you need. A 4 CD box set of 100
classic mod tracks spanning 1958 - 1966, the eight year period during
which you were nobody unless you had a large target painted on yer
coat and 2 dozen wing mirrors attached to your Vespa, it makes a
perfect Oliver clobbering utensil.
Compiled by original Mod (Phil Smee), with contributions from 60s
DJ Jeff Dexter, 'face' around town Richard Shirman (from The Attack).

Jam
in a Box |
|
I used to think Paul Weller was the only person
on the planet who hadn't made any serious fashion faux pas, even
during the 80s, until I saw him resplendent in his denim shorts
& espadrilles is the Long Hot Summer video that is. True Mr Weller
knows how to carry off a Farah and Pringle combination in varying
shades of pink, but he's not infallible.
Fortunate then, that his contribution to music is big enough to
allow forgiveness for even the most heinous sartorial crimes. So
brace yerself, in case you need a reminder of his path to fame,
Universal / Polydor are about to unleash two CD box sets of The
jam singles releases.
Their dominance of the singles chart began in April 1977 with the
release of their debut single, 'In The City' and ended over five
years later in November '82 with 'Beat Surrender'. Esteemed biographer
Paolo Hewitt (yes him off BBC2's 'I Love 1980s' programmes) has
provided the sleeve-notes for the 16-page limited edition booklet
also in the package. A must methinks.

Timo
Maas Remixes Placebo |
|
Renegade indie kids Placebo
will release the third single from last year's 'Black Market Music'
album on Virgin this month in an abundance of formats and with surprise
dance remixes.
The third single 'Special K' follows two Top 20 hits from the LP,
'Taste In Men' and 'Slave To Wage', and will feature exclusive remixes
specifically geared for the dancefloor.
Amongst those reinterpreting the Placebo original are veteran dance
producers Brothers In Rhythm (Dave Seamen and Steve Anderson), who
have worked their magic previously on Kylie Minogue and the Pet Shop
Boys and producer/remixer of the moment Timo Maas, who remixed Madonna's
'Don't Tell Me' last year. |
