The long-range forecast is for the best summer in
at least five years, after 12 months of record rainfall. Temperatures
could reach the nineties in a series of mini-heatwaves.
The Ashes cricket series, Wimbledon, Royal Ascot
and the Chelsea Flower Show are all expected to be blessed by sunshine.
It is hoped that the good weather will have the twin effects of
attracting tourists and helping to cub foot and mouth disease, which
can be destroyed by heat and sunlight.
Bill Giles, the former BBC presenter who runs the
London Weather Index Limited, has used records dating from the 17th
century and the Met Office's weather model for his prediction. He
said : " All the signs are that we are going to have a good summer.
It would be very rare indeed to have a continuation of the bad weather
we have endured over the past six months."
