Part-time
Daycare - Introduction
|
|
Parents
may require part-time rather than full-time care for their child.
Parents may need childcare for just one day a week while they study;
or for a morning while they shop; or they may need childcare cover
if they have part-time work.
Most of the organisations that provide
full-time day care also offer part-time day care. Places that require
the parents to stay with the child, ie. Parent and Toddler groups
and drop-ins are listed at the end of this section.
Local authority day nurseries
can offer part as well as full-time care.
Community nursery centres
may be able to offer part-time care, depending on the needs of the
parent and the child.
Workplace nurseries may be
able to offer part-time care, depending on the needs of the child
and parent and the availability of places.
Private day nurseries May
be able to offer part-time care.
Childminders can often offer
part-time care, though this will obviously need to be discussed
with the individual childminders.
Playgroups and Pre-School Provision
Children attending playgroups and pre-school provision are able
to meet other children and play with them on a regular basis. They
are good places to meet other parents and they also enable parents
to be closely involved in their child's play activities. Most playgroups
and pre-school provision happily welcome children with a disability.
Activities include gluing and sticking,
painting, collage, printing, sand and water, play dough and clay,
dressing up, dolls, home corner, jigsaws, building bricks, large
toys such as a climbing frame, a slide, bicycles and ride-on toys,
nursery rhymes and a book corner.
Most playgroups and pre-school provision
are only open during term-time. For mor information parents should
telephone or call in and speak to one of the adult leaders. Most
playgroups and pre-schools have waiting lists so it is a good idea
for parents to put their child's name down a few months before they
want them to start.
Pre-School Learning Alliance
The pre-schools in this section are all members of Kensington and
Chelsea Pre-School Learning Alliance - PSLA.
A committee of parents manages each
group and employs trained pre-school leaders to run the sessions.
Parents support the leaders by helping out at sessions on a rota
basis. They stay at the group until their children are settled and
help with fund-raising and choosing equipment.
Pre-School Group Advisors are employed
to help the parents maintain good standards in the group. PSLA pre-schools
are for children aged from 2 years 9 months-5 years. The PSLA believes
in equal opportunities for all children regardless of background
or ability. These beliefs are expressed through staff training and
recruitment, play equipment and provision of positive images.

8.45 am-5.15 pm extended day playgroup for children aged 2-5 years
either full-day or sessional hours (phone for details). A creche
runs throughout the day in two-hour sessions, there is a drop-in
service for children aged 0-5 with parents/carers and a holiday
scheme in the six week school holiday for children with parents/carers
offering a range of activities.
The centre provides a variety of
in-house adult education courses, including a Diploma in Childcare
which is taught one day per week. Punch & Judy exists to advance
through play the education of under-five year old children living
in the Earl's Court area, especially those on low incomes, and to
relieve poverty amongst homeless and refugee families, in particular
by the provision of information, advice and educational courses
for parents and carers.

Daycare - Parent and Toddler Groups |
|
The following types of provision
are for parents who can stay with their children during the time
they are at the facility. Some of the places offer a crèche facility
but these are likely to have limited places and names will need
to be put on a waiting list.
As the name implies these tend to
cater mostly for parents with under threes, but groups are usually
open to parents/carers with 0-5 year olds. They are usually set
up and run by the parents themselves, though sometimes with help
from organisations such as the PSLA. Where the group is run with
help from the PSLA. Where the group is run with help from the PSLA,
contact Kensington and Chelsea Pre-School Learning Alliance.
Toys and activities are provided
for the children while the adults have a chance to meet and talk
to each other. Refreshments such as tea and coffee for the adults,
and juice and fruit for the children are usually provided. There
may be a small charge to cover costs.

Daycare - Drop-in Centres |
|
These are centres with experienced
staff where there are play opportunities for children and a chance
for parents to meet each other and join in activities and classes.
Parents are also encouraged to help with fund-raising and most drop-in
centres have parent representatives sitting on their management
committees.
Parents stay with their children.
There is no need for parents to book a place at a drop-in, or to
tell staff in advance. Parents can just go along during the hours
that it is open and stay as long as they like.
The staff at drop-ins are aware
of the value of our multi-cultural society and this is expressed
through staff recruitment and training and the play equipment provided.
They aim to give play opportunities to all children whatever their
level of ability.
Sometimes parents and carers are
unsure what to expect from a drop-in and it is true that every centre
has its own atmosphere and range of services it provides. If parents
need to know more, they should telephone the centre and the workers
will be pleased to answer questions. If parents feel that they need
some support on their first visit, they should ask a friend to go
with them, or find out I fthe centre has time set aside for new
users.
Drop-ins are usually free, though
there may be a small charge for refreshments.
The centres also often offer crèche
facilities where children can be cared for for part of the day.
Parents will probably have to put their name on a waiting list if
they want to use the crèche. There is usually a small charge for
using the crèche.

Local Authority Services Nursery
Schools and classes provide education for children aged 3-4. They
give children the chance to develop learning skills and to mix with
children of the same age. Activities are varied and include sand
and water, outside play, matching and sorting and art and craft
activities.
Often, more parents want nursery
places for their children that are provided. A decision will be
made on the basis of several factors: the number of places available
at the school applied to, the educational, medical and social needs
of the child and the nearness of the child's home to the school.
Parents should put their child's
name down with the school they prefer when he or she reaches his
or her second birthday. The age at which the child is actually admitted
depends on the number of places available. Three terms is usually
regarded as the minimum time children should spend in a nursery
school or class, though it is preferable for them to attend for
at least four terms.
Nursery schools are totally independent
of primary schools. Nursery classes are an integral part of an infant
or primary school. Both types of facility provide either full-time
or part-time places or a mixture of both. It should be noted that
having a place at the nursery class does not automatically mean
the child will be able to enter the school itself, although this
often does happen. To make enquiries about putting a child's name
on the waiting list, parents should contact the secretary of headteacher
at the chosen school.
An appointment can usually be made
to visit the school. Local Authority nursery education is free.
