Kara Kara specialise in handmade Japanese furniture, ceramics
and glass. The owner is Nobuyoshi Hamanaka, a Japanese designer
and calligrapher who has a number of other shops in Japan. Colette
Harkins has managed the shop for just over two years.
What does your shop specialise
in?
We are known for our hand-crafted Japanese teapots and teacups and
also for our selection of green and roasted teas (some from Kara
Kara's own tea plantation in Japan). We have loyal customers who
come to us from all over the world and we also sell to health spas
and by mail order.
If you could take home one object
from the shop home with you what would it be and why?
Well I've actually bought it and taken it home with me already.
A beautiful ceramic saki set with an aubergine and olive glaze and
a slightly metallic surface. I love it because it looks heavy but
when you pick it up it's actually as light as an egg.
What do you enjoy about working
in South Kensington?
I enjoy it because although its quite a quiet area it still has
a buzz. We also get lots of interesting customers. Because we are
quite close to the Kings Road we also have quite a few tourists
who come to the shop.
What are your favourite
places to eat and drink locally?
I enjoy going to lunch in the noodle bar Phat Phuk in Chelsea Farmers
Market, but my favourite is The Pieman on Chelsea Green. I pick
up something there and eat it in St.Lukes Gardens which is really
beautiful.
