QPR had the right to feel hard done by, as Grimsby
performed a smash and grab raid to take all three points in a match
that Rangers largerly dominated.
Grimsby had Danny Coyne to thank after the goal
keeper pulled of a series of top class saves to deny a determined
and hardworking QPR side. Coyne was called in action as early as
the 4th minute as he blocked Murray's 25 yard drive. Then soon after
the half hour he denied Kiwomya, after the QPR striker had been
put through. His shot was blocked by Coyne after a goal seemed certain.
Baraclough and giant striker Crouch both came close,
but again found Coyne standing in the way. Grimsby did have efforts
with both former Rangers player Allen and Wayne Burnett trying their
luck from outside the box.
In the 2nd half QPR stepped up a gear but again
Coyne came to the rescue after Baraclough had swung over a cross
that was met by a Peter Crouch header which had goal wriiten all
over it, but Coyne dived full length to save.
Again in the 63rd minute Coyne was alert to a Knight
freekick, he changed direction after the ball had taken a deflection
to push it round the post. From the resulting corner Ready rose
to head the ball goalwards but again Coyne was there to parry it
away.
QPR totally dominated the 2nd half and looked the
more likely to take the points, but that was all turned on it's
head when Grimsby's Kevin Donovan lifted in a free kick, which Paul
Groves met with his head and with the aid of a slight deflection
steered the ball into the bottom corner of the net. QPR pushed forward
and could have levelled but new signing Marcus Bignot dragged his
shot wide and Knight headed over when clean through.
When Rangers did hit the target they again found
Coyne in inspired form It was just not to be for QPR and Ian Holloway
will have to pick up his side after this demoralising result.
